New Quarter Park
Located off of Lakeshead Dr. situated adjacent to the Queen's
Creek sits New Quarter Park. New Quarter Park covers 545 acres of forest,
ridges, bottoms and wetlands, which are home to a variety of wildlife. In
fact, The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries' Birding and Wildlife
Trail program has recognized New Quarter Park as one of coastal Virginia's best
sites for wildlife watching and hiking.
Although not always existing as "New Quarter Park", this plot of land has
seen its fair share of historical events. First inhabited by the Woodland
Indians, the land was granted to the English Settlers in the 1630's. In the
early 1700's, Robert "King" Carter official gave this tract of land its current
name and slaves lived and worked at this site for 150 years. New Quarter Park
was also the site of Civil War action, which is exhibited by the redoubts
present throughout the park. York County official acquired the land in 1976
through the federal surplus land act program. Today the park is enjoyed by
thousands of outdoor aficionados each year.
New Quarter Park boasts hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, picnic
shelters, a disc golf course, a canoe and kayak launch, a floating dock/fishing
pier, basketball and volleyball courts, a softball field, horseshoe pits and
more! Come take advantage of all this beautiful park has to offer. The park is
open daily to the public from 8 a.m. until dusk and on Fridays 10 a.m. until
dusk.
